Late 19th century The body with six lobed sides, repoussé decorated with Chinese genre scenes, chrysanthemums, and dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls, the scalloped and pierced rim with chased dragon design, the bottom engraved with an eight point star bearing the inscription Shanghai Volunteer Corps, April 4, 1865 with Chinese characters gongbuju (municipal council) and the motto Juncta In Uno Omnia (all joined in one), the outside edge of the foot ring marked with makers mark reading Xinyuan and S.O. 6 1/2in (16cm) high, total silver weight approximately 70oz troy (2177gm)
