Description

Ship building; A Sailing boat in harbour; 'Falcon' all inscribed in pencil lower left pencil heightened with white (3) 17.5 x 24.5 cm; 24.5 x 17.5 cm Footnote: Born into a wealthy Swansea family, Calvert Richard Jones became renowned as a marine painter, draftsman and a pioneer photographer. He was educated at Eton and Oriel College, Oxford, where he graduated first class in mathematics. Jones was ordained a priest and became the Rector of Loughor. He also travelled extensively in Europe, particularly in Italy and Malta, and took a great interest in the sea and maritime objects, ships being his favourite subject for both his paintings and photographs. A close friend of Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot whom he met at Oxford, Jones moved in the same circles as Henry Fox Talbot and came to hear about his early discoveries in photography. Jones's work stands out particularly in the early development of photography because of his ability to fuse his new skill in photography with his experience as a marine watercolourist. Jones is credited with having taken the first photograph in Wales, a daguerrotype of Margam Castle, in 1841.
