Description

'The Brighter Side of War, a Pleasing Story of Boers and Yeomen' signed lower right 'Sheldon-Williams / 1901' gouache en grisaille heightened with white 36 x 53 cm Footnote: Literature: The original for an illustration in The Sphere on 28 th September 1901 Born in Hampshire, Sheldon-Williams studied at the Slade School in 1896-98. A forerunner of today’s photo-journalists, he combined his role as a soldier in the Second Boer War (1899-1902) with work as a journalist-illustrator for London periodicals, particularly the Sphere. He was later appointed an official Canadian War Artist in World War I, before returning to England.
