His works are imbued and informed by the landscape and nature of his surrounding area. Having worked as an assistant at Barbara Hepworth’s studio he was a fine carver. He noted in the 1950s: “ I learnt that even on a very large scale carving, less than a hair’s breadth rubbed off with emery paper could alter the whole sculpture” .
