This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 32c Flag Over Porch Self-Adhesive Coil stamp issued January 24, 1997. "O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain/ For purple mountain majesties, above the fruited plain." When Katharine Lee Bates gazed from the summit of Pike's Peak across the rolling plains of America spreading out before her, she was inspired to write America the Beautiful, a song celebrating this nation's beauty and majesty.
