Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Cardinal" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the limited edition collection of The Songbirds of the Fifty States. Each cover was postmarked on the anniversary of statehood in the appropriate state capital. The Cardinal is distinguished by its flamboyant looks and proud voice. The male dresses in full red plumage and wears a proud crest that he raises and lowers at will. A black mark, a stout coral-red bill, and dark red feet also mark the bird. The female is much more subdued in her dress. She has an olive-gray back, dull reddish wings and crest, and soft pink-brown underparts. Unlike the female of most species, the female Cardinal is as accomplished a vocalist as the male. As the female weaves the deep cup of bark strips, rootlets, and grass and lines it with fine grass or hair, the male follows her about and voices his most melodious song. He feeds her during the two weeks that she incubates the eggs and while she prepares for a second brood, he often assumes the care of the fledglings. Image Size: 8.5 x 8.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 18 in. Unframed. (B07106) See More
