John Steven Dews (British, born 1949) 'Mariquita overhauling Attair with Mariette ahead to windward, St Tropez, 2008' signed 'J. Steven Dews' (lower left), inscribed with title and further inscribed ''Mariquita' hard on the breeze' (on stretcher) oil on canvas 67 x 101.9cm (26 3/8 x 40 1/8in). Footnotes: Provenance With Tryon Galleries, London. Private collection, Greece. Mariquita was a notable 19-metre composite cutter of 1911, designed and built for Mr. A.K. Stothert of Kensington by W. Fife & Son at Fairlie. Registered at 100 tons gross (60 net), she measured 82 feet in length with a 17 foot beam and, after numerous changes of both name and ownership, has survived until the present day when she is still racing competitively.
