An Apulian Red-Figured Knob-Handled Patera Attributed to the Painter of Vatican 24, Circa 340-320 B.C.also extensively painted on the underside. Diameter 11 inches. Property from the Collection of Michael Minick, New York Provenance: Estate of Frell Albright, Houston. Hart Galleries, Houston, 8 October 1989, Lot 840. Note: This patera was attributed to the Painter of Vatican 24 by A.D. Trendall in personal correspondence, March 15, 1991. Trendall notes the similarities to published parallels in determining this attribution, both in terms of the seated female illustrated in the interior of the patera, as well as the female heads on the A and B sides of the underside. Paterae are seldom seen painted on the underside. This piece was later published in Trendall’s supplements to The Red-figured Vases of Apulia. A copy of this correspondence will be provided to the purchaser.
