此香盒圆口沿，子母口扣合，盖面略鼓起，浅圈足，器形圆润秀美，线条流畅柔和。盒内与足内髹黑漆，外侧为素地，再于其上堆起肥厚的朱漆，通过精湛的刀工层层剔刻，勾勒出绽放在茂密枝叶丛中的大朵牡丹。牡丹在中国传统文化中被视为花中之王，象征圆满、浓情、富贵、雍容等美好意象。此盘不作其他繁缛雕饰，全心全意只把牡丹刻画到了最高境界，从中可见一片匠心。参阅：德川美术馆藏“牡丹文堆朱香合”，《唐物漆器》P42，No.59
