ATTRIBUTED TO JOHANN PHILIPP LEMKE (NUREMBERG 1631 - STOCKHOLM 1711) Figures preparing to embark in a busy winter port scene oil on canvas 34 x 50 cm (13 1/3 x 19 2/3 in) PROVENANCE: Sale, Hampel Fine Art Auctions, Munich, 19 June 2012, lot 344 The present work can be attributed to Johann Philipp Lemke, a prolific German-Swedish draughstman. His drawings are in museums in Darmstadt, Hamburg and Berlin. As a battle painter he was influenced by Jacques Courtois and Pieter Van Laer and his compositions are characterised by low horizons. The crossing of the Little Belt is in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm. His portrait was engraved by Sandrart and his miniature self-portrait is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (A3443).
