A Nepalese carved wooden stele of Indra. 17th centruy The four-armed king of the gods seated in dhyanasana on his recumbent elephant Airavata, backed by an flaming nimbus and aureole, his primary hands held in varada and vitarka mudra the finely modeled body clad in a closely fitted dhoti and sash, adorned with an headdress and earrings. Remains of pigments. Height 25.5 cm Provenance Private collection, Aachen, Germany, acquired at Lempertz, Cologne, 10./11.6.1983, lot 838, and thence by descent. With old incoice. Die hinduistische Gottheit sitzt in dhyanasana auf ihrem Reittier, dem Elefanten Airavatna, umgeben von einer Aureole, die Haupthände in varada und vitarka mudra haltend, in den beiden anderen Händen Vajra und Gebetskette, geschmückt mit der typischen halbrunden Krone und Ohrgehänge. Reste polychromer Fassung. H 25,5 cm Provenienz Privatsammlung, Aachen, erworben bei Lempertz, Köln, 10./11.6.1983, Lot 838, seitdem in Familienbesitz. Alte Rechnung vorhanden.
