A View of the countryside at Waterloo with figures, carriages and horses and La Haye Samte on the left oil on canvas 60 x 90cm Footnote: Provenance: By descent in the artist's family to the present owner The artist, then Captain George Jones, visited the battlefield after the Battle of Waterloo and this view was engraved by Charles Turner and published in May 1816 after this original oil. In that print, not only is La Haye Samte identified, but so is the spire of the Church on the horizon at Planchnoit as well as in the centre middle distance La Belle Alliance (where the Duke of Wellington and Prince Blücher met before the flight of Napoleon) and on the far right the Observatory. Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. There are scattered losses along the lower edge of the painting and localised areas of raised paint in other areas. Retouchings are present around the edges of the picture. The varnish is yellowed and uneven, giving the painting a dark and grubby appearance. The wooden frame has several knocks and staining.
