Chris Calle (B. 1961) "Traditional Tipnol Canoe" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on The Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Traditional Tipnol "Reaching For New Horizons" stamp issued May 23, 1992. For centuries, Marshallese kings and chiefs built canoes for fishing, travel and transportation of their families and retainers. Sizeable sailing canoes called Walaps carried as many as 50 people and their provisions over vast distances. Mid-sized Tipnols, built for rapid transportation and fishing, accommodated up to 10 people. Breadfruit trees caulked and fastened with coconut fibers originally comprised the basic structure, although today's Marshallese canoe builders utilize modern construction materials such as plywood and epoxy. Image Size: 11.75 x 15.5 in. Overall Size: 15 x 22 in. Unframed. (B13827)
