A jadeite and silver inkstand by Yamanka, the rectangular greenish white jadeite stand mounted with sterling silver mounts for the feet and pen holder, also with a cylindrical postal stamp receptacle with the cover carved in low relief with a spray of flowers, signed Yamanaka. 4 1/4" L., 10.8 cm. Lot notes: Formed using a fine jadeite inkstone and another fine jadeite box. This piece imagined by Yamanaka is a perfect example of the type of experimentation which took place in the early 20th century. As the market for chinese things became over flowing with the finest jade, porcelain, bronze and what have you in the early 20th century following the fall of the qing dynasty. The appetite for Chinese things was progressively being stoked and pioneers like Edward Farmer, Yamanaka, Julius Bensabott and others found ways of adapting these antiques, in essence reusing and recycling them in order to find new markets. Some of these today are considered masterworks in their own right.
