A small black leather accordion dispatch case bearing the embossed coat of arms of Napoleon I (1769-1821) with a hand engraved gold lock bearing maker’s mark and tax letter for Vienna, c.1806. Opens to reveal an interior with four compartments of gold silk dividers and richly embossed red Morocco leather. Accompanied by a letter in a diplomatic envelope from Joseph E. Davies, United States ambassador to Belgium (1938-1939), stating that he acquired this portfolio with the provenance that this was used by Napoleon during the Russian campaign.
