TWO LITERATI PAINTINGS AND A WORK OF CALLIGRAPHY. 19th century. Comprising a hanging scroll mounted with two ink paintings of wintery landscapes by Hoashi Kyo’u (1810 – 1884), ink and colour on silk, signed kyo’u hitsu, with seal Hoashi, each 7 x 12cm, offered together with a hanging scroll depicting a scholar’s hut overlooking a lake, signed Chikuka sanjin with two seals; and an unmounted piece of calligraphy by a priest, with seal Mitsudo, possibly from the Daitokuji temple, 124 by 33cm. (4) Provenance: Formally the property of novelist and critic Francois King (1923 – 2011) posted to Japan by the British Council.
