PROVENANCE: From the Collections of Franklin Wood (1924-2019) Cartersville, GA. Franklin was born in a small farmhouse near White GA in 1924. After spending his early childhood on the family farm the family moved to the City of Cartersville where he attended school graduating in 1942. Franklin entered the Navy as a cadet aviator. On March 3, 1943, John was commissioned an Ensign and received his Wings of Gold, becoming one of the Navy's youngest naval aviators. In 1947, Franklin was retired from the Navy. He was a civilian flight instructor, supervisor and squadron commander in the Primary Training Squadron Flying Training Air Force. He met his wife Ying Su while she was attending flight training safety courses. Ying Su came from a prominent family in China. Her family blessed her marriage with numerous pieces of porcelains and Jade. The items in this sale are from her collection. Dimensions (cm): Height: 31 Length: 16 Width: 16 Chinese Qing Dynasty Period Blue & white Fu Bats and scrolling tendrils motif porcelain double gourd Vase. Potted in a shape of squared double gourd resemblance, with square bellies and ovoid upper bellies conjoined together, squared lower section finishing into a slender bottleneck at the top, suspending cylindrical neck, with a straight opening lip, raised on splayed foot base and slightly concave. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white under glazed base color which contrast against the cobalt blue fine color, depicted of many flying Fu bats surrounded with scrolling interlocking tendril, foliage and flowers bloom, enclosed with scrolling ruyi and double dine blue rings lines. A characteristic heaped and piled effect, the under glaze grayish-blue concentrates in certain areas, bubbling through the surface of the glaze and turning a deep blue-black. This inadvertently gave texture, energy, and shading to the design. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous, the shape is uniformly proportioned. Mark on base, a six under glazed blue seal script characters reign mark, Made In The Years of Qianlong Reign Period of Great Qing Dynasty.
