Tom Lydon (American, B. 1944) "Timberline Lodge" Signed lower left. Original Chalk drawing on Construction Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This piece is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 25c Francis Ouimet stamp issued June 13, 1988. Francis Ouimet was one of the best amateur golfers of his time. At 20, he won the U.S. Open, the first amateur ever to do so. The game was an exciting one, as Ouimet tied with two leading English professionals. And, in the playoff, it was Ouimet who won the game. Interestingly, he never went professional, but made his living as a stockbroker. In his spare time, Ouimet gathered trophies in the U.S. Amateur Championship, the French Amateur Golf Championship, the Western Golf Association Amateur Championship, and in the American-versus-England Walker Cup matches. His skill was so impressive that he was also elected to the Golf Hall of Fame and became the first American elected captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Saint Andrews, Scotland. Ouimet also founded a caddie scholarship fund, which awarded some $400,000 in scholarships before his death in 1967. In addition to golfing, Francis Ouimet also enjoyed stamp collecting.
