MAMLUK - SILVER & GOLD INLAID DISH a wonderful quality Mamluk Revival Damascus Cairoware dish, made in brass with an intricate design with silver, copper and gold inlaid decoration and calligraphy. Probably late 19thc or early 20thc. 34cms diameter *This and the following lot were acquired by Carrington Bonsor Williams FRS (1889-1981) whilst working in Egypt in the 1920's. He was a Royal Society Entomologist and received The Grand Order of the Nile Class Four Award in 1923. *The translation is, in the centre of the dish (Glory to our Lord, the Sultan al-Malik al Nasir, helper of the World and Religion (Nasir al-Din). In large lobed cartouches, Qur'an, chapter XVI (al-Nahl), part of verse 53 and chapter XL (Ghafir), part of verse 44. In small hand in three of the large cartouches, God, Muhammad, Ali.
