A Tested Dian Culture Bronze Bell with Rare Patterns of Tigers and Bull Heads, c. 100 BC. Surface examination, metallographic, mineralogical and metallurgical examination, radiographic examination, XRF analysis. The Dian Culture of ancient Yunnan mastered the art of bronze casting, producing a wide variety of utilitarian and decorative objects in unique styles. An enormous number of their artifacts display lively scenes or imaginative decorative designs of animals. Classic cast bronze bell is covered with low-relief patterns of felines, possibly tigers, and hooved animals in animated poses. Felines are relatively rare as decorative motifs in Dian art. Also visible on the bell are two bull’s heads, with long curving horns. Bulls of this type can be seen on many Dian bronzes, and appear to have been of great significance to the culture. Most likely they were major, cultural totemic figures. Dimension: 13 1/2" high x 9" wide A LIST OF RECOMMENDED THIRD-PARTY SHIPPER IS AVAILABLE UNDER SHIPPING INFORMATION.
