Inscribed Wanli guichou corresponding to 1613 and of the period Of rectangular form with shallowly-rounded sides rising to an everted rim and standing on a spreading foot, the interior painted in gold and black on a rich tomato-red ground with an official and four attendants in a riverscape, the official standing under a large parasol held by an attendant behind him and being presented with a new hat by another attendant, the other two attendants carrying books and a wrapped parcel, possibly a qin, the interior of the curved sides gilt on a dark brown ground with six cartouches of a striding dragon reserved on a wave ground, the exterior sides inset with woven basketwork, the foot gilt with a key-fret band, the four corners still reinforced within the foot with original metal mounts, the dark brown base gilt with the Wanli reign mark and cyclical date guichou year corresponding to 1613, Japanese fitted wood box. 51cm (20in) wide.
