E RADCLIFF 1920- SNOW BRIDGE OIL ON CANVAS. Signed. Image size 23in by 19in. With farme size 24in by 20in. Lynn Radcliffe studied under Edgar Payne and they were good friends until Payne’s early passing. By ca. 1950, Radcliffe was a Member and exhibitor with the Malverne Artists, now called TriCounty Artists of Long Island. I believe he also studied under Ralph Fanning at some point. Starting around the mid-50’s and after, Radcliffe painted in the Rocky Mountains and in the 60’s he painted in New Mexico. One of the paintings he was most proud of was his Mt. Burgess on Emerald Lake in the Rockies (I was shown a black and white picture of it). Radcliffe did some beautiful paintings of NY and New England scenery, of which I was able to acquire one example. Interestingly, a smaller portion of his oeuvre (body of work) consisted of abstract paintings inspired by outer space, as Radcliffe was the designer of the rocket engines for the Apollo 11 moon landing mission. Background: Lynn Radcliffe would go down in world history as “Engine Tester”, although I think of him as “Rocket Man”. He was in charge of the White Sands rocket propulsion test facility in New Mexico, where he figured out how to get Neil Armstrong to and from the moon in the Apollo 11 mission. Basically, Radcliffe designed, developed and tested the lunar module’s rocket engines, but this was tricky because the module was incapable of flight in Earth’s atmosphere. Radcliffe is a genius. He’s an expert oil painter, author of books on classical piano technique / method (you can see him playing at 96 on youtube), author of books / expert on boating and boats, etc. He’s what we’d call a true Renaissance Man. Living on Long Island and being an artist during the time of the Abstract Expressionists must have inspired him to try his hand at abstraction too because I saw about a dozen nice abstracts by him and I was able to acquire two. The leaders of the school, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, also lived on Long Island, and I know that Radcliffe particularly liked Franz Kline paintings.
