Edo period (1615-1868), probably mid-19th century The cover and exterior of the detachable tiered boxes decorated in gold takamaki-e, gold togidashi maki-e and kirikane with an all-over design of a Chinese-inspired landscape with the autumn moon over picturesque mountain formations rising from the mist, the cover with an elegant pavilion sheltered beneath overhanging pine branches perched on the hillside overlooking the stream, a moored boat in the left foreground, the landscape design continues over the sides of the box with the return of more wicker baskets in fishing boats crossing the stream, the interior containing a removable tray embellished in gold togidashi maki-e and gold takamaki-e with a flock of geese in flight and standing on the rocky banks of a stream flanked by reeds and two fitted miniature rectangular boxes lacquered with exotic birds perched on a willow tree, the interiors and undersides of all the boxes of rich nashiji; unsigned; 9.2cm x 14.3cm x 11cm (3 5/8in x 5 5/8in x 4 3/8in).
