Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century Each worked in silver wire of varying gauge, each decorated with a mirror-design of the other, the body with four elongated, rectangular-lobed pink and lime-green panels, each enclosing a different bird-and-flower scene comprising: (1) A pair of sparrows flying toward stalks of flowering peony, irises and mukuge (rose of Sharon); (2) An uguisu (warbler) perched among camellia and prunus; (3) A butterfly hovering over flowering stalks of lilies, kikyo (Chinese bellflowers) and nogiku (wild chrysanthemums); (4) A pair of tanchozuru (red-crested cranes) standing among susuki (miscanthus), fuyo (cotton rosemallow) and chrysanthemums, all reserved on a black ground of stylised chrysanthemum heads interwoven among tight whorl patterns; each vase unsigned.
