Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1670 Painted in underglaze blue with a continuous scene of a ho-o bird beneath stylised clouds perched on a rocky ledge overlooking a stream amongst a mass of flowering peony and chrysanthemums on one side and a second ho-o in flight on the other, the shoulder with a band of karakusa ('Chinese grasses') beneath a band of repeated lappets, the neck with rectangular panels of formalised foliage, the en-suite cover similarly painted with a ho-o flying amidst peonies and surmounted with a tear-shaped finial. 68.5cm (27in) high.
