A Thai gilt bronze figure of Phra Malai, early 19th century, modelled visiting hell, standing on a lotus base wearing samghati with an alms bowl suspended from his right shoulder, the base is cast with various emaciated figures and animals all around a central dish of severed heads, a skeleton lies before the base, 38cm high Note: The scene depicted here is of the Thai legend of the Buddhist monk Phra Malai. He accumulated so much merit that he developed supernatural powers. He would visit Buddhist hells, where he meets suffering figures such as these depicted around the base, who implore him to ask their living relatives to make merit on their behalf.
