A VERY RARE LATE 16TH/17TH CENTURY JAPANESE NANBAN LACQUER COFFER ON STAND Southern Barbarian, unusually decorated with recumbent lions, raised mother of pear foliage, birds and entwined foliage. 38 cm x 42 cm. Note: In the second half of the sixteenth century, Japanese lacquer made for Western markets was known as Nanban (Southern Barbarian) lacquer, a reference to the epithet given to foreigners from Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands. Many of these export lacquers were made in Kyoto.
