JUAN GÁLVEZ Mora 1774 - Madrid 1846 Portrait of Queen María Isabel de Braganza in front of the Royal Casino. H. 1817 Oil on canvas size 57 x 45 cm Origin: - Private collection, Madrid. In 1816, the Villa de Madrid in gratitude for the second pregnancy of Queen Maria Isabel de Braganza (1797-1818) agreed to give her a pleasure palace that was next to the Embajadores roundabout, the later known Casino de the Queen. The best painters of the court participated in the interior decoration, such as Vicente López, Zacarías González Velázquez, Juan Antonio de Ribera and Juan Gálvez, among others. Precisely to this last artist we attribute this work that could well be the sketch of an official portrait truncated by the premature death of the queen on December 26, 1818. Juan Gálvez was appointed chamber painter by Fernando VII, a position that it held until 1835. Queen María Isabel de Braganza was a great fan of Fine Arts, honorary academic of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and founder of the Royal Museum of Painting and Sculpture, today the Prado Museum.
