(19th century) Sugar Cane Plantation, Yucatan Peninsula or Cuba, unsigned, 26 x 52 in.; unframed - Provenance: Private Massachusetts Collection - Note: While the artist and exact location are unknown, the scene is one that played out in numerous regions and with different crops at the center of the story.ÿ The scene is inhabited by indigenous people working, a black man doing domestic work near a run down shack and a young white boy who rides the sledge behind the oxen. They inhabit the scene on different social planes. Working together they have tamed this wilderness, a theme that is common in American 19th century landscape paintings. Both animals and plants have yielded to their management.
