Andries Daniels (c. 1580 � after 1640), Mary with the Child and Little John in a Wreath of Flowers.Little is known about Andries Daniels. In 1599 he was apprenticed to Pieter Breughel the Elder. Registered with the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke, in 1602 he became a master and married Jozijnke van der Hoerst, with whom he drew up a will together in 1640. He could have worked as a workshop member of Frans Francken because a number of his works show interior pictures of him.A wreath of bright, white, violet and blue flowers, strawberries and rowan berries (Sorbus aucuparia) frames a medallion with Mary with the Child and John on a gold background. The image type of the Madonna in a wreath of flowers was designed by Jan Brueghel the Elder. (Brother of Pieter Breughel the Younger) probably at the suggestion of Cardinal Federico Borromeo and enjoyed great popularity with collectors in the first decades of the 17th century.The composition of the floral wreath by Andries Daniels follows a specific model by Jan Brueghel the Elder, who varied it for two of his paintings. It is a work from around 1606/07 for Archbishop Federico Borromeo (1564-1631), the interior shows a Maria with child and is now in Ambrosiana in Milan (“Flower Garland Around the Virgin and Child ( Milan) Inv. No. 71, Klaus Ertz / Christa Nitze-Ertz, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Critical Catalog of Paintings, Vol. I-IV, Lingen 2008-10, Vol. III, No. 461). The other work from around 1608 shows Maria, St. Elisabeth with baby Jesus and boy John.
