A Greek Orthodox Pilgrim's Scapular, with Icon of St. Nicholas Circa late 17th-early 18th Century A.D. Heavily patinated bronze scapular with St. Nicholas iconography; inside scapular is "Prayer for protection from evil invoking the Holy Trinity, S Matthew & S Stephen" on laid paper; overall length 16.5 inches. Scapulars such as these were popular among pilgrims to the Holy Land from Greece. These scapulars were believed to offer the pilgrim protection on what was then a treacherous journey. Iconography of St. Nicholas was and remains incredibly popular among the Greek Orthodox.
