John Fulton Folinsbee (American, 1892–1972) Grey Day - Winter Signed 'John F. Folinsbee' bottom left, oil on board 8 1/4 x 10 3/8 in. (21 x 26.4cm) Executed circa 1913-1914. Provenance Rarebird Antiques, Syracuse, New York.Acquired directly from the above.Private collection, Syracuse, New York. Footnote: Exhibited "Thumb Box Exhibition," Salmagundi Club, New York, New York, n.d. Literature Kirsten M. Jensen, John F. Folinsbee Catalogue Raisonné, JFF.1667 (online version only). Note This newly-discovered work appears to be a preliminary study for Folinsbee's larger 1913-1914 painting, Snow Patches, whose current location is still unknown. Both works were possibly painted from the exact same vantage point in Woodstock, New York during the winter months of 1913-1914. At the time, Folinsbee was indeed studying with Harry Leith-Ross at The Woodstock School of Art, where he learned and mastered the technique of plein air painting, as exemplified by the quickly applied, fresh colors in the present work. Condition report: In overall good condition, without any sign of restoration as seen under UV light. We do notice prominent crazing through the surface of the board, which might be lessened after the painting is cleaned as dust is presently lodged in the paint cracks (which are, therefore, more noticeable in the paler areas of the work). Frame: 13 1/8 x 15 1/8 x 1 1/2 in.
