The prize was founded in 1855 by Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane, the long-serving fourth President of the Society. Edward Sang 1805-1890 was a Scottish mathematician and civil engineer, born in Fife, and is best know for his tables of logorithms and calculations on the earths rotations. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in May 1836, and served as Vice President 1883-1885.
