此歙砚形体塑造成雁形，砚面平滑柔润，大雁仅头部写实刻画，整个砚体巧作成大雁的身体，极为形象。作者通过抽象化的处理方式，成功塑造了一只正在休憩的卧雁形象，恬静而安逸。配有木托。 歙砚为历代文人所称道。南唐后主李煜说“歙砚甲天下”；苏东坡评其“涩不留笔，滑不拒墨，瓜肤而縠理，金声而玉德”；米芾认为“金星宋砚，其质坚丽，呵气生云，贮水不涸”。
