Dmitry Krasnopevtsev (Russian, 1925-1995) A group of four drawings one signed with initial 'K' (upper left) pen and watercolour on paper size of largest: 13.1 x 10.2 (5 3/16 x 4 in). (unframed) 4 Footnotes: Provenance Acquired directly from the artist by a private European collector Thence by descent Dmitry Krasnopevtsev had an unparalleled skill of transforming a simple object into a transcendental symbol with an open meaning. Placed in a neutral and obscure setting, natural objects (desiccated branches, plants, shells) in Krasnopevtsev's art are often juxtaposed to those created by a man (vases, bottles, jugs, paper rolls). The object in Krasnopevtsev's still life, often broken or damaged, is always detached from its origin and purpose and adopts a new function of a timeless artefact. Whilst the artist never worked in repetition or cycles, many of the images and subjects can be traced throughout his oeuvre reappearing in both paintings and graphic works such as the present four drawings, evocative of Krasnopevtsev's celebrated metaphysical still lifes.
