A late 19th century aquamarine and diamond necklace, composed of a fringe of graduated oval aquamarine drops with old and rose-cut diamond graduated twin arch and trefoil spacers, mounted in silver and gold, c. 1890, to later fine link chain, length 39.0cm Wear commensurate with age with surface scratching and nicking to mounts, silver fronts with typical dark grey patina. There is wear to claw tips on aquamarines, worn thinner and shorter. Each aquamarine has a short gilt metal sleeve neatly attached with solder to the reverse (gilding largely worn away) suggesting there may originally have been an alternate fitting for a tiara, however no other fittings accompany the necklace. Aquamarines are a medium to good aquamarine blue, reasonably well matched though some a little paler, there are varying degrees of typical inclusions, some generally small chips and some rubbing to facet edges in places. Calculated weights of aquamarines approx. 2.50 to 2.70, 3.80 to 4.20, 2.50 to 2.70, 4.40 to 4.80, 5.00 to 5.50, 1.90 to 2.10, 2.90 to 3.20, 3.40 to 3.80, 4.20 to 4.70 and 4.20 to 4.60 carats. Old-cut diamonds clarity approx. SI - I, some with small chips, facet edges rubbed in places, colour in range approx. JK - M+.
