A REMARKABLE BRONZE TOAD FLASK Tibet, late 19th century. Imaginatively cast as a large toad holding the flask nozzle in its mouth and with two handles on the sides for suspension, all raised on a flared foot. The creature's contours and lumpy skin are realistically rendered, and it feels quite similar to the real toad skin when you touch it. The form is unusual and only a few seem to be known in museums, these were probably used by pilgrims of a certain social status to carry water on their journey. Condition: Overall good condition with traces of age and wear and some nicks here and there. Provenance: Belgium private collection, acquired in a French auction in 2018. Weight: 1795 g Dimensions: Height 29.5 cm Literature and auction comparison: Compare to a very similar flask at the Norton Simon Museum, accession number P.1998.3.4.
