A CHAM THAP MAM STYLE SANDSTONE HEAD OF BUDDHA Champa, late 12th to early 13th century. The head is adorned with a high ornamental headdress and a diadem surmounted by a canopy. Mounted to a recent wooden base. Sculptures of this style are characterized by a return to hieratic formalism and the simplification of shape, leading to a certain loss of vitality. Condition: Very good condition commensurate with age, extensive weathering, wear, and some losses. Provenance: Belgium private collection, acquired at an auction in Paris (invoice lost).
