A BASTAR BRONZE OF ELEPHANT WITH HOWDAH India, 19th-20th century. This very large figure of elephant consists two parts, the elephant itself and the umbrella with a lotus bud on top. The head of the elephant is remarkably well decorated with large spirals on each ear and with the moon and sunshine symbol just above the trunk. The tusks are small but the elephant's trunk and tail therefore very long. Across the entire elephants body are linear patterns to be seen. The elephant's legs are also adorned with bracelets. The mahout sits behind the elephants head with a dagger in his left had. The umbrella is finely decorated as well with circular and linear patterns clearly visible. Condition: The elephant and umbrella are in good condition whereas the goddess is missing in the howdah and the four wheels on the elephant's feet. Provenance: Collection of an Indian gentleman.
