Maharaja Ram Singh in procession entering a fort, India, Kotah, circa 1850, opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper laid down on cloth, painting 51 x 74.5cm. Accompanied by his queen and harem, who are protected within a red palanquin, and his flamboyant retinue of horses, elephants, and followers, Maharaja Ram Singh returns to the fort. This vivid scene is replete with a profusion of flora and fauna, including monkeys, peacocks, birds and fish, and crocodiles in the moat.
