Rani Lakshmi Bai leading a procession, North India, second half 19th century, opaque pigments on paper, shown astride her horse, with three swordsmen on foot ahead of her and other female riders in her procession, the background with a walled palace and grassy hills, within red outer border, faint drawings to reverse, 35.2 x 26cm. Lakshmibai, the Rani of Jhansi (19 November 1828 – 18 June 1858), was an Indian queen of the Maratha princely state of Jhansi in North India currently present in Jhansi district in Uttar Pradesh, India. She was one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and became a symbol of resistance to the British Raj for Indian nationalists. This painting likely depicts a scene from history when on June 17, 1858, during the fighting at Kotah-ki-Serai, five miles south east of Gwalior, Rani Lakshmi Bai dressed in male attire, was shot at and fell from her horse.
