AN INLAID CELADON GLAZED CERAMIC HANDLED EWER Korea, Goryeo dynasty style, 13th century Double gourdshape with ovoid body and bulbous neck, curved spout and ear shaped interwined handle, the lid with a stylized bird finial, the whole external surface covered with a celadon glaze with a black and white inlaid decoration of flying cranes inside circular medallion amidst stylized clouds. 28 cm high Provenance: Italian private collection. This ewer exemplifies a typology of Korean pottery from the Goryeo period. The double gourd shape, borrowed from China, welcomes a brilliant olive green celadon glaze, also inspired by Chinese ceramic production. The use of the inlay technique for the rendering of the decoration is instead a specialty in which the Korean potters excelled, used profusely especially in the thirteenth century.
