A STONE SCULPTURE OF A FEMALE DEITY Khmer, Angkor Vat style, 12th century The divinity depicted standing, wearing an elegantly draped sampot skirt with a classic fishtail lower end, a gracefully modeled naked torso, a showy necklace around the neck. 45 cm high Provenance: Italian private collection; formerly a Swiss collection, purchased at Spink & Son. Ltd., London, 6 October 1975. For a sculpture in this style, a classic of the Khmer civilization of the 12th century, depicting a devata (a Hindu deity), complete with head, of similar size and preserved in the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, see E.C.
