A fine late 19th century engraved gilt brass Renaissance-style small striking 'Turmchenuhr' with alarm Signed Planchon à Paris, no. 4376 The case on a moulded base with turned feet, fluted pilasters to the corners and surmounted by a pierced dome and thoughtful cherub finial, engraved all over with scrolls and strapwork. The circular gilt Arabic dial with cast bezel and fancy blued steel hands. The two train movement with lever platform escapement striking the hour and half hour on gong, alarm setting dial mounted on the back plate. Sold with the original fitted leather case and winding key. 8 in (20.2cm) high Footnotes: Provenance: The collection of Dr Eugene Antelis. Mathieu Planchon had a shop at Palais Royal and was active c.1870-1900. A number of his clocks have sold through these rooms. He was often inspired by a Romanticised notion of 17th century European table clocks, which he 'miniaturised' and brought up to date with 8-day spring driven movements, lever platform escapements and travelling cases. It is easy to see why they remain popular.
