竹雕类竹木牙雕器在工艺美术品中虽然都是小器，但一器之微，往往穷工极巧，考工考史，源远流长。《礼记·玉藻》，由此可见。竹刻成为专门艺术，应自明代中期开始。其实，明末朱松邻（鹤）创为嘉定派竹刻，子朱小松（缨）、孙朱三松（稚微）三世相传，声名已著。历代竹刻艺术，大体有圆雕、浅雕、浮雕三种。尤见巧思。以各种竹雕如佛像、人物、鸟兽、山水、杂器、铭文等。古朴浑厚，多具有重要艺术价值。
