An Unusual French Gilt Bronze, Gilt and Green Painted Wood Wall Clock 19th century The circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals within engine-turned border, set onto a green painted panel with applied gilt bronze mounts, with an aperture for the sunburst pendulum, within a Louis XV style giltwood frame and glazed shadow box. (H: 21 1/2, W: 17, D: 5 1/2 in.) Provenance Collection of Robert & Barbara Safford, Vaux Hill, Audubon, Pennsylvania. Freeman’s, Philadelphia, September 25, 2013, lot 16. Acquired directly from the above sale. Private Collection, Long Island, New York. Condition report: Light surface scratches to porcelain clock face, with an older repair along the central hole in the dial. Minor radiating cracks to clock surround, with a large repaired crack closest to the eight o’clock position. Small areas of loss to green paint; openwork gilt decoration mounted to green panel is intact though separated in areas. Cracking and sections of loss to gilt back panel inside clock case. Radiating cracks to the scalloped decorative face of the inner frame. Minor chipping and gilt losses to the outer frame and corners; corners have minor to moderate separation. Not tested for functionality; Freeman’s does not guarantee timekeeping ability. Without winding keys.
