He studied under Zhao Shaoang at the age of 17, and his painting school belongs to the Lingnan School of Painting. In 1950, the family moved to Hong Kong . In 1970, he went to Taiwan to teach at the Chinese Culture University and settled in Taiwan. In 1993, he won the Special Award of the Grand Palais in Paris, France, and was the first Chinese painter to receive this award. In June 2016, he received an honorary doctorate of literature from National Dong Hwa University and in November of the same year he received an honorary doctor of literature from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.In 2002, the "Ou Haonian Cultural Foundation" donated more than 100 paintings to the Academia Sinica to establish the Lingnan Art Museum. He is part of the Lingnan School of painting. In 2019, a solo exhibition of his work was displayed at the Asian Art Museum (San Francisco). He was born in 1935. He was a student of painter Chao Shao-an.
