A Chinese Porcelain Coffee Cup and Saucer from the Sir Joshua Reynolds Service, Qianlong, circa 1785, painted and gilt with a cypher in a ribbon tied oval cartouche within a Fitzhugh type border in underglaze blue Provenance: From the Private Collection of the Aylmer family, who are descended from Sir Joshua Reynolds' elder sister, Mary Palmer (1716-1794) See Howard (David Sanctuary) Chinese Armorial Porcelain, pg.686 for a tea canister from this service where it is noted that the cypher contains every letter in the word ''Reynolds'' and that it seems almost certain that Sir Joshua Reynolds designed the service for himself. For a plate from the same service see Christie's, King Street, 7 April 1997. Typical wear to gilding and some other minor surface wear.
