Attributed to Joseph West of Bath, British fl.1790-1834- Chudleigh Rocks, Devon; watercolour and bodycolour heightened with white on paper, titled (on the backing board), signed and titled (on the reverse of the mount, according to a label attached to the backing board), 29.5 x 42 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Joseph West is believed to have been a pupil of Thomas Barker of Bath. His landscapes mostly depict views in the vicinity of Bath, although he also visited Wales and Devon. He is possibly the same ‘J West’ who published a volume of instructional drawings of trees and cottages executed in soft ground etching. He exhibited four times at the British Institution in London. The subjects of his other works include Charlecombe Church near Bath, Somerset; a Mill at Ambleside, Cumbria [Bristol Museum & Art Gallery]; Chepstow Castle, Monmouthshire; Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire; and Caernarfon Castle. The present work was conceived at Chudleigh Rocks in Devon, a majestic series of limestone rock formations. John White Abbott (1763-1831) and Francis Towne (1739/40-1816) also painted the area, working at a similar time to Joseph West of Bath, and similarly in watercolour. The artist’s highly individualised treatment of foliage is evident in the present work, and he uses white heightening to great effect. Please refer to department for condition report
