Ca. 664-30 BC. Late Period - Ptolemaic Dynasty. A black inlay of the goddess Isis. She is depicted in profile, kneeling on a plinth with her right knee raised above her left knee in the foreground. An anklet is incised onto her left leg. She is wearing a collar and her face is adorned with a tripartite wig and her typical crown, shaped like a hieroglyphic throne. Separate from her body are two arms with outstretched wings attached below, with great detail on the feathering. Each wing has two holes at the end and Isis’ chest has four holes, so that the arms and wings could be tethered onto the body. Isis was an extremely important deity, especially from the 1st millennium BC onwards. Her cult was by far the most successful outside of Egypt, and her worship reached as far as Britain. She had many attributes and responsibilities, fitting the needs of her worshippers, but she was commonly associated with magic and motherhood. Size: L:Set of 3: 64 - 86mm / W:20 - 42mm ; 45g. From a London private family collection; formerly acquired on the UK art market in the 1960s - 1970s; thence by descent.
